1️⃣ Michaelangelo’s slaves:
Prisoners figures struggling to free themselves from the stone. These unfinished works emphasize the idea that the forms are already within the stone, and the artist’s role is to reveal them. It can also be understood as freeing our inner essence from the shackles of the ego and the material world.

2️⃣ Michaelangelo’s Moses (in San Pietro in Vincoli)
The statue conveys intense emotion and power, and strength of character. Moses looking to his left, holding the tablets, with an intense gaze. A reminder that the body should “embody” our divine essence.

3️⃣ Michaelangelo’s David:
A metaphor to the triumph of the human spirit. The sculpture showcases the potential for greatness within every individual. David’s iconic pose embodies the idea that inner strength can overcome external obstacles. With his left (latent)hand, David shows(manifest) a sling (the tool) on his shoulder. With his right (manifest) hand, he’s hiding(latent) a rock, the object of impact. What a great dual approach of tackling life issues, our inner demons, our Goliath .

4️⃣ Psyche and Eros (multiple artists)
In psychology, the symbolism of Psyche and Eros (Cupid) is often associated with Carl Jung’s concept of individuation and the integration of the anima and animus.
Psyche, representing the feminine principle, is seen as the soul or inner feminine aspect within an individual. Eros, the masculine counterpart, represents the animus or the inner masculine aspect. The mythological story of Psyche and Eros involves their union, symbolizing the integration of these inner aspects, leading to a more complete and balanced self, and psychological wholeness.

The wall frescoes can be read as the parallelisms and dualities between the chapters of the stories of Moses and Jesus in the Bible:
-Circumcision (covenant with God)/ Baptism (w/St John the Baptist)
-The well, encounter with the burning bush / The temptations
-the calling of Israel / The calling of the Apostles
- 10 commendmants/ The beatitudes
-Aaron/Saint Peter etc…
The ceiling frescoe, in reverse order, can be seen as a neoplatonic ascension process to achieve oneness with God, : from sin, to choice, to sacrifice, to integration of opposites, to non duality, to Theosis.

2.Understanding virtues and their allegorical figures:
Thomas Aquinas, a medieval theologian and philosopher, outlined four cardinal virtues and three theological virtues in his ethical framework. The cardinal virtues are prudence (wise decision-making), justice (giving each their due), fortitude (courage and strength in facing challenges), and temperance (moderation and self-control). The theological virtues are faith (belief in God), hope (trust in divine salvation), and charity (unconditional love and goodwill towards others), all of which Aquinas believed were infused in the human soul by God to guide moral conduct and lead to spiritual perfection. You’ll find virtues often depicted as women in frescoes.

3. Hell according to Dante:
Dante’s depiction of Hell reflects his medieval Christian worldview and the moral consequences he associated with different sins. The severity of punishments increases as one descends deeper into Hell:
Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, Treachery. Will come handy in Florence.

4. Jesuit (IHS) churches, and Consolation:
teachings of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. Consolation refers to a state of spiritual comfort and connection with God, marked by a sense of peace and joy. On the other hand, desolation is a state of spiritual emptiness or disturbance, characterized by a feeling of separation from God.
